Back Bay Loop

Looking for an activity that’s outside and free? We brought our bikes and headed to the Back Bay Loop Trail in Newport Beach.

The Back Bay is beautiful family friendly trail that has amazing views and offers a fun way to get out and enjoy nature!

The trail is open from 7am to sunset; it's used for walking, running or biking.

Parking: 4 entrances to park around the bay (parking is free, bonus!)
Newport Dunes
Interpretive Center
East Bluff Drive
Science Center

Trail: Most of the trail is on a paved bike path though portions of the course are on paved streets; the trail is almost entirely flat with a couple of slight hills. Note: the portion of the trail along Dover and Irvine Ave. can be tricky; having an experienced pedestrian biker is a plus. We continued toward Upper Newport Bay Nature Reserve and curved around the Ecological Reserve, hopped on the Mountains to the Sea Trail & Bikeway, stopped at Vista Point and continued along the Newport Bay.

Time: plan approximately 1 hr 30 mins to complete the 10.5 mile loop (with breaks in between); depending on your bike pace and length you wish to go.

Notes:
Take a look at the trail map to plan out your journey. Bring water, snacks (not much shade) and a jacket (it can get cold depending on the time you go). Most importantly enjoy the scenery. There are several restrooms along the Back Bay Loop: Castaways Park, Mariners Park, the Interpretive Center, Newport Dunes, and within RV Park.

The Back Bay is a great family friendly, dog friendly trail!
