Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve

Looking for an outdoor activity that's easy to do and free? We headed to Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve in Huntington Beach.

Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is the largest saltwater marsh along the coast of California. More than 200 birds have been identified at Bolsa Chica.

Parking: Two parking lots (1) Pacific Coast Highway (2) Warner Avenue. Parking is free but limited.

Trail: There's 8 common trails ranging from 0.72 miles up to 5.93 miles. We walked the Pocket Wetland Loop Trail an easy flat trail great for all ages. The volunteers handed out a free California Coastal Explorer Guide - bonus!

Time: The Reserve is open everyday from 6am - 8pm. Arriving early morning or before sunset is best; you can see the most birds and avoid the heat.

Notes: There's limited shade; bring sunscreen, hat, water and snacks. The trail is a mix of dirt and rocks wear walking shoes to avoid small pebbles getting in between the toes. I would recommend an infant carrier and not a stroller. There's a porta potty on the PCH parking lot side. Dogs and bikes are not allowed.

The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is a great nature trail for kids to explore!
